In today's mobile society, it seems that everyone has somewhere to go. It could be by planes, trains, or automobiles. One evident fact, is that we treat our pets like family. We want the choice of taking our pets with us wherever we travel.
Health and safety are key considerations when traveling with a pet. Unattended pets can hurt themselves in unfamiliar surroundings, and strange smells can easily spook them. Eaasing them through car sickness or settling them down for a trip usually is just a matter of conditioning. Start with short trips to the park or to a friends house. Limiting the amount of food and water just before the start of the adventure can help reduce the chance of car sickness. Be sure to stop frequently for potty breaks with fresh water offered each time.
If car sickness continues to be a problem, then ask your vet for medication to help that pet. As people we can use Dramanine or Scopolamine, whichb are commercially available. For pets, similar medications can be specially made in a tropical gel or flavored treat.
An important reminder for all traveling pet owners is to have your pets medications with you, as well as any pertinent medical and personal information. Remember also to properly store your pet's medications as you would your own (i.e. Don't leave it in a hot car).
As you plan your next trip, remember that your pet is packed and ready to go. Mom, Dad, Kids and the family pet can enjoy that "get away" with just a little bit of advanced preparation. The rewards are worth it.
